Primus Epic® Based Cockpits Can Be Upgraded Overnight
NBAA, ORLANDO, Fla., Oct. 18, 2009 -- Honeywell (NYSE: HON) announcedtoday that it has obtained Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) certificationfor new avionics functionality for current production Gulfstreamaircraft.
The new capabilities include:

• Enhanced features for the industry-best Synthetic Vision–Primary FlightDisplay (SV-PFD), based on Honeywell’s award-winning SmartView™ synthetic
vision system,
• Future Air Navigation System (FANS 1/A),
• Controller Pilot Data Link Communications (CPDLC), and
• Wide Area Augmentation System-Localizer Performance with Vertical guidance(WAAS-LPV).
With the additional features, current production Gulfstream G350, G450, G500and G550 aircraft will be able to operate to Required Navigation Performance -Special Aircraft and Aircrew Authorization Required (RNP SAAAR) values of 0.1nm separation (RNP 0.1).
The enhanced SV-PFD brings several new features to the best synthetic visionsystem in class, including the use of range rings, allowing the flight crew tonaturally gauge the distance of terrain and obstacles from the aircraft, andhigh resolution runway detailing that allows the crew to clearly identifyvisually the runway they are taking off from, further reducing the risk of arunway incursion.
“These new avionics capabilities are designed to accommodate the plannedfeatures of the Next Generation Air Transportation System (NGATS) and SingleEuropean Sky ATM Research (SESAR) functionality, and are easily accommodated inPlaneView cockpits based on our Primus Epic technology because of theexpandability and growth we built into the system,” said Rob Wilson, President,Business & General Aviation, Honeywell Aerospace. “Honeywell’s flightmanagement systems will improve operating costs and air traffic managementcapabilities on business aviation aircraft, saving time and reducingemissions.”
The addition of WAAS-LPV approach capability will give these aircraft access tomore than 1,300 WAAS approaches in the United States. The certification of thenew production Gulfstream G350, G450, G500 and G550 aircraft to RNP SAAAR 0.1capability will mark the first time any aircraft has ever achieved both thestandard of RNP 0.1 capability and WAAS/LPV, and will enable the aircraft allmajor approach types worldwide including low RNP and WAAS/LPV approaches.
“The expandability of PlaneView cockpits, based on our Primus Epicarchitecture, is the true promise of avionics flexibility and growth we pledgedto the industry when we began developing the first fully integrated cockpit inaviation history,” Wilson said. “With a software upload, these aircraft will beNext Gen compliant, giving Gulfstream operators the functionality they needtoday and the knowledge that their PlaneView cockpits can be further expandedto meet future flight requirements.”
RNP is a key component of the FAA’s next-generation performance-basednavigation system. It utilizes global positioning and inertial reference systemnavigation, allowing aircraft to fly predetermined paths loaded in their flightmanagement computers. Honeywell is also offering its Go Direct Services, whichassists operators in attaining RNP SAAAR operational approval. “RNP will saveGulfstream operators both time and fuel costs during airport operations andthis functionality will improve aircraft capability in the evolving air spaceoperations,” said Chad Cundiff, Vice President, Crew Interface Systems,Honeywell Aerospace. “Honeywell’s Go Direct Services is the leading service foroperational approval of Gulfstream operators. It offers operators a completesuite of services to help them gain operational approval for RNP SAAAR in atimely manner including the ability to perform RNP SAAAR database validation, thereby offering operators a turn-key solution for the implementation of RNPSAAAR.”
RNP SAAAR procedures help aircraft access airports at weather minima lower thanmany other types of approaches and fly more precise approaches and departures, increasing operational efficiency and reducing operating costs, noise andemissions. WAAS provides vertical guidance during LPV approaches, increasingnavigation accuracy and availability. FANS is designed to allow more aircraftto safely and efficiently utilize oceanic airspace using automatic dependentsurveillance and data link technology.
The new avionics capabilities for the Gulfstream G350, G450, G500 and G550aircraft will also include paperless terminal charts and maps, allowing thecrew to leave all their paper charts while at home and enjoy an unprecedentedredundancy that far exceeds industry standards.
The new avionics functionality is complemented by a significant improvement inthe aircraft position accuracy through the introduction of High Integrity GPS –Hybrid (HIGH) Step 1 update to the Honeywell Integrated Reference System (IRS)units. This upgrade allows a more robust aircraft position display by blendingthe GPS signal with the position measurements coming from the IRS, allowing fora graceful degradation in case of GPS signal loss, a significant improvementwhen flying GPS-based approaches like RNP or WAAS-LPV.
